If you are like many people, you read your daily horoscope--sun sign--predictions in the newspaper from time to time.  And they are often remarkably accurate!  That is because people who are born in the same month, or with their Suns in the same sign, have a similar pattern to their lives.  They may have parallel interests and motivations.  For example, there are more architects born in the month of March than in any other month.  In fact, people born in the same place and at the same time will have a remarkable similarity in their lives, even though they are not related to each other.  They will often die at the same time too, though in different locations and for different reasons.  These things are not coincidence. 

Astrology is based on the scientific positions of the planets and the effects of their magnetic energy field upon us.  We know that the Moon exerts its influence on the tides of earth, on menstrual cycles, and moods, even though it is 384,403 km. away.  And as the earth travels around the Sun it marks the passage of one earth year.  It brings our seasons of spring, summer, fall, and winter, and those influence our health, sleep, and activities.  Every planet in our solar system has an energy field, rather like an aura, and this field is powerful enough to have an impact on our own aura.  Astrology is the study of how the placement and movement of planets influences our mind, body, emotions, and spiritual development throughout our entire life.  

Though Sun-sign astrology is fun and sometimes accurate, there is much more information available to the astrologer than simply the position of the Sun, in a person's birth (natal) chart.  At any given moment, the planets of our solar system form a pattern that is unique and will never, ever, be repeated again at any time throughout history.  Thus a person born at any specific time, is indeed, unique, for that pattern which is imprinted on their life, will not happen again.  The birth of a child is a special moment.  When the first breath is drawn, vital life force enters the tiny physical form and establishes the soul in that body for the duration of of this lifetime.  All the magnetic energies of the planets make their imprint on the new life's form and set a pattern.  Therefore an astrologer can instantly see the matrix of that soul, the purpose, the challenges, and the gifts, of that person simply by reading the birth chart.

 

An Astrological Chart

 

 

The picture above shows a birth chart.  It is made up of 12 sectors (houses) around the center.  Viewed from earth, this shows where each planet was at the moment of this person's birth.  This pattern will never change for it marks a unique moment in history {of course the planets in the sky keep on moving, and making new aspects to this chart, and that is how we predict events}.  Each sector represents a particular area of life, and when many planets occupy one sign or one sector, there is an emphasis on that part of this person's life.  It is where he will encounter most of his lessons, reap many rewards, or find the most challenges.  The lines drawn in the middle, joining one planet to another are the aspects between planets, or how one planet relates to another.  Some aspects will be easy (the blue lines) and others present more difficulties (the red lines).  The objective of a soul is to live up to the best they can be, and this potential is shown in the birth chart.

The 12 sectors of a chart are known as 'houses' and they are numbered from the middle left side in a counter-clockwise direction.  You will see in the above chart that there is a large planetary emphasis in the first house and the second.  The first house represents one's essential 'self' and the second represents the self's values and possessions.  So this soul, Brad Pitt, in this case, has come into this life to learn what makes him tick and what he values.  He will have a strong interest in things that help him to understand his essential being and those things important in his life.  Because his Sun is in the first house, he will also be a person who is recognized and noticed more often than someone whose Sun is in the third or fourth house, because the first house is one of great importance.  Here is a PDF report, computer-generated,  for this chart.  A report like this is a good place to start.  It consists of around 20 pages of general information about the individual, and provides an opportunity to assess one's strengths and weaknesses. 

Astrology will not actually predict the future.  The movement of planets around us, as they form aspects to the birth chart, will show trends, times of challenge and opportunity, potential for marriage, children, career, and health issues, however.  What astrologers do is to decode what the universe is trying to tell each one of us, through the patterns of the sky.  Here is a PDF example of a predictive computerized report.

 

 

Special charts can be drawn up to show the potential in relationships, whether they are romantic, parent/child, business partnerships, or friends.  These charts, known as composites and synastry, or relationship, reports, are very helpful when determining the potential, and best direction to pursue.  Above is what is known as a 'synastry grid' showing how the planets of one person's chart interact with another person.  This is used by the astrologer to see patterns and then interpret for the client.  Here is an example of a relationship (synastry) report.  Computerized individual or synastry reports cost around $25. from most astrologers.  Personally-compiled chart interpretations from astrologers can range from $100. to $300. for a type-written report.  They provide a much more precise interpretation. 

Which type of chart interpretation is for you?  Though a computer can list all the elements of a chart, and give you the basics, it cannot synthesize the entire picture.  But it is a good place to start if you have never had a chart reading, and because it represents a small expenditure.  On the other hand, an astrologer can evaluate the importance of each aspect, house emphasis, sign emphasis, structure, potential, challenges, and gifts.  A good astrologer also has a keen intuition, developed from many years of chart interpretation, and uses this to pull the whole picture into focus and relevance for the client.  Therefore a personally-compiled chart will provide much more detail.

An astrologer will not tell you what to do with your life, what job to take, who to marry, when to have your children, or where is Mr. Right!  What she will do is decode your birth chart and tell you what it means in plain language.  If she is doing a relationship chart interpretation, she will tell you what the pros and cons are with a particular individual, so that you can make an informed decision.  If she is doing a predictive interpretation, she will tell you when there are openings in a particular field, such as career, so that you can seize the moment.
