Organic Hemp

Hemp is a land healing rotation crop that can be used to make over 25,000 different products.  It is a herbaceous annual crop that produces strong and versatile fibers and highly nutritious grain, and has been used since before biblical times.  George Washington and Thomas Jefferson were hemp farmers, for in those days hemp farming was an esteemed calling and a useful profession.

Hemp is not pot.  Although both hemp and marijuana are categorized as Cannabis Sativa, marijuana has an average potency of 5-15% THC (the chemical substance which gives marijuana its psychoactive properties) whereas hemp has less than 0.3%THC.  At this concentration, hemp has no psychoactive properties.... i.e., you cannot smoke your hemp T-shirt!

Hemp grows fast, and to heights of 16 feet.  Its roots can reach down as far as three feet, helping to reduce soil erosion and build organic matter.  It is proving to be excellent in rotation with Soya beans reducing the incidence of sys- nematodes by as much as 80%.  Hemp is a naturally hardy crop and therefore has no need for chemical herbicides, so is a perfect crop for the growing organic market.

Highly nutritious Hemp grain is processed into a variety of edible products with a pleasant nutty taste. (oil, flour, de-hulled grain). The grain is about 24% protein and 30% oil.  Hemp oil is high in perfectly balanced essential fatty acids (omega 3, omega 6 and GLA).  Hemp protein contains 8 of your essential amino acids and also contains anti-oxidants, adding further health benefits and shelf stability.

Agri- fiber offers particular advantages to rural communities since transportation costs require primary processing facilities to locate in rural areas, in close proximity to the farms where the fiber is grown.  Annually renewable agri-fibers are good for agriculture and the environment.

Because of its association with marijuana, hemp has been prohibited in many countries for more than half a century.  More recently governments in many industrial countries have realized that the hysteria that lead to hemp's prohibition was unfounded, and it's cultivation has been again legalized.

  • Hemp is a natural herbicide known for its ability to smother weeds when grown at a density suitable for producing high quality bast fiber.

  • Hemp has a lower net nutrient requirement than other common farm crops, since it can return 60-70% of the nutrients it takes from the soil when dried in the field.

  • Its deep root system is very beneficial as it is effective in preventing erosion, removing toxins, providing a disease break, and helping the soil structure by aerating the soil for future crops, when it's grown in rotation with other crops.

  • Hemp is a particularly high yield fiber crop.  In fact, an acre of hemp produces more biomass than most other crops.  As a result hemp can be used effectively in many applications as an alternative to wood or fossil fuels.  For example, hemp can be used as a renewable, low polluting source of  fuel, or hemp can be used to make paper and fiberboard.

Hemp seeds (grain) are also a potentially valuable commodity.  The seeds have exceptional nutritional and therapeutic value.  They are second only to soybeans as a source of complete vegetable protein and hemp seeds contain all 8 essential amino acids in the correct proportions humans require. Hemp seeds also contain 30-35% oil by weight.

Hemp seed oil is approximately 80% polyunsaturated essential fatty acids (EFA's).  Furthermore, the proportion of these oils (specifically omega-6 and omega-3) in hemp seeds most closely match the ratios which have been determined to be most beneficial to human nutrition.  In addition, hemp seed oil is the only edible oil which contains therapeutically valuable GLA (gamma-linoleic acid). The left over seed cake is a rich source of protein which can be ground into flour.

Hemp fiber is made into a most beautiful cloth which can be used for everything from draperies to fine garments.  It is four times more durable than cotton and has a texture like linen.  Because hemp cloth is such a perfect material and uses no pesticides, it is usually left in its natural cream-color, or dyed with organic substances such as flowers, clay, and leaves.  The resulting look is one of casual elegance and good taste.  The price of hemp clothing is comparable to that of organic cotton or wool, and is often combined with these other fibers for a different look and feel.

When you choose to wear hemp clothing you choose to help shield the environment from pesticides.  You choose sustainability and quality.  You choose to let your body rebalance itself by protecting it from harsh imbedded chemicals and dyes.  When you choose to use hemp oil soaps you naturally moisturize your skin, and keep harmful ingredients away from your body.  When you choose to use hemp oil in your car and on your furniture and floors, you are protecting our natural resources--trees--from destruction.  When you choose hemp you have chosen to nurture yourself and your environment.

The next time you need T-shirts, shoes or sox... soap, shampoo, or lotion... a dress, a shower curtain or a rug, choose hemp.  Its affordable, its beautiful, its environmentally and people-friendly, and its available online from wherever you live.  Have your purchase delivered right to your door... and feel good about your contribution to life.
