Rudrakshas

It is said that even hearing the word 'rudraksha' is a blessing, and to actually see these holy beads is a greater blessing.  To wear them is the ultimate blessing, and is reserved for the fortunate few.

Yes, you can buy rudrakshas here, at the bottom of this page, but please read on first, so you know what type you need or want.

The round, blue fruit of the Rudraksha tree has within it a special seed that grows a tiny hole through its center, just waiting to be strung on a thread.  Rudraksha trees are mostly found in the South Eastern Asian islands of Java, Sumatra, Borneo, Bali, Iran, Java, Timor (Indonesia), and parts of Nepal.  Around 70% of the Rudraksha trees are found in Indonesia, 25% in Nepal and 5% in India.

In ancient times it was discovered that these small seeds had powerful electromagnetic properties that, when worn, would impart their sacred qualities to their owner.  Buddhist monks, saints, seers, and gurus have always worn them, for their energy greatly assists in obtaining higher states of consciousness.  Besides giving the user peace of mind, focus and concentration, Rudraksha beads have proven to be a great help in curing physical illnesses.  They are also said to have anti-ageing properties.

Rudraksha beads are beads of power and they work through touch, sight, worship, or possession.  You may wear them, hold them, keep them in your pocket, or at your altar for worship.  If cared for properly, they will last for generations.  The name 'Rudraksha' literally means "tears of Shiva".  It is said that Shiva meditated for 1000 years for the welfare of all living things.  When he opened his eyes, tears dropped to the ground, giving rise to Rudraksha trees.

The seeds are naturally marked by one face to twenty-one, defined by small lines running from end to end.  It was discovered that these subtle divisions gave the seed specific properties, according to the number of facets, or mukhis.  The most abundant seed has five facets, and through observation and testing it was discovered that it had properties to help regulate blood pressure and offset the malefic effects of a poorly-placed Jupiter in one's birth chart.  Seeds with two divisions are very helpful in creating peace and harmony in relationships.  Three mukhi beads help to offset a malefic Mars in one's birth chart, and to more effectively use one's energy for good rather than combative behavior.  Rudrakshas range from one to twenty-one mukhi beads, and each has its own frequency to benefit people in many ways, from prosperity to health to higher consciousness.  For more detailed information on the properties of each bead, and their astrological correspondence, see the page on Mukhis.

Rudrakshas can be worn by anyone.  They are for men, women, and children.  They benefit all people, regardless of race, religion, occupation, or lifestyle.  A person can wear beads of one type of mukhi or several types together.  Wearing all at once will bring in the many energies of the Rudrakshas at once.  When they are charged with mantras they become like beacons of Light, and they radiate their sacred vibrations to the wearer and those close to the wearer.  The effects can be felt immediately, but with time (40 days is recommended) the results are very clear.

On the left is the Akarshaya Siddh mala.  It contains all beads from 2 to 14.

The power of a Rudraksha bead has nothing to do with its price.  What matters is that the bead is genuine (there are lots of fake Rudrakshas around).  The mukhi should be well defined, corns and contours should be natural, and there should be no cracks near the central hole.  Smaller sizes are considered to be very auspicious.  Your best guarantee when purchasing Rudrakshas from India--since you cannot be there to inspect them first--is to choose a reputable dealer.  I have already done that part for you (you can purchase directly from the URL at the bottom of this page)!  Then you can be sure you have only the best quality, genuine Rudrakshas.

Rudraksha can be worn at all times.  Some books say that Rudrakshas should be taken off during sex, menstrual cycles, or visits to a funeral, but more recent thoughts are that Rudrakshas are for all times of day or month or occasion.  Remove the beads while you sleep, and it is advisable to take off the beads while taking a bath because soap may dehydrate the natural oil content of the beads.  To care for your beads it is good to wash them every month or so, by soaking in water overnight and then brushing them to remove collected dust and dirt.  Then let them dry completely and dab a little oil on them to re-hydrate them.  You can use olive oil, sweet almond oil, or the traditional mustard oil for this.

An affinity develops between the wearer of the Rudraksha bead and the bead itself therefore it should not be interchanged with anyone else, including family members.  When worn in silver or gold casing the electromagnetic powers of the bead increase, thus increasing its effectiveness.

On the right is the Prosperity Bracelet, made with two x 6 mukhis, two 7 mukhis, and one 8 mukhi, plus aquamarine, lapis lazuli, and a quartz crystal for added power.

Hindus and Buddhists have their own traditions surrounding the correct use and respect of the Rudraksha.  But people of all faiths may wear these beads and user them according to their own beliefs.  Using mantras with the beads enhances their effectiveness, but so does prayer and meditation and sacred ceremonies.  The more you put into your beads the more they will return, but because Rudrakshas have such a pure vibration of their own, one can wear them without doing anything, and they will still continue to send you healthful, spiritual, prosperous energy.

With regular wearing of your Rudrakshas, you will see such wonderful changes in yourself, and even in those close to you, and you feel a sort of friendship with your beads.  Your beads are helping you to be a better person.  In return, you will probably wish to care for your beads in special ways.  This may include the recitation of mantras or prayers.  You may choose to keep your beads, when not wearing them, at a special place such as an altar or a meditation spot.  You can play CDs of hymns or sacred music near them.  Light some incense or sage and purify the area where you keep your beads overnight.
