Shamanism
A shaman is a person--man or woman--who interacts with the spirit world to bring healing to a person. Shamen come from every country and every culture in the world. They serve as the healers, midwives, religious leaders, and spiritual guides of the community. Shamanism has been around for perhaps 100,000 years, according to scientists. It is part of the human condition to seek guidance, advice, and help from a trusted source, and thus shamen filled that role well. In olden times the skills needed by shamen were taught to an individual who showed an aptitude, at an early age, from the existing shaman. There were many years of apprenticeship and the shaman teacher would continually evaluate the student to be assured of their suitability for this strenuous undertaking. Great integrity was, and is, required of all shamen. Purity of heart and intention is paramount. Today, shamen learn in a similar way, but not generally beginning in childhood. It is more likely that an adult will feel a calling to help others at some point and gradually seek the appropriate channel. I believe that healers are born; not made. The desire to help humanity, and the ability to connect with the spirit world may come first. The techniques for how to do that will come later, often with instruction from an elder shaman. A shaman apprentice will be trained in the ways to enter the spirit world safely, do the necessary healing, and return to this world. They will be taught how to protect themselves on these journeys. Entering the spirit world is foreign to most people and one may feel they are free-floating and unable to think in their normal way, so instruction is vitally important or they are at risk. The dimensions where shamen journey are very much like the dreamspace. The shaman may need to fly from one place to another, take on another form, or travel at a very high speed, all of which would be impossible in this 3rd dimensional reality we call 'home'. To accomplish this, many shamen use a drum beat to match the heart rate and sometimes faster. This audible frequency helps the shaman to alter his or her energy frequency to the necessary level of the desired dimension. A drum is not always used, however, and some people, with experience in journeying, can alter to the desired frequency at will. For myself, I do not use a drum beat. I have done so in the past, but it soon became a distraction. It seemed that I had a natural ability to enter another dimension at will. I did not understand this process at first, but in time I learned how to handle this ability, to turn it on or turn it off, as needed. That phase of my apprenticeship came early on, somewhere in the early 80's, and I would call it a crisis in consciousness, a spiritual awakening, and a very confusing time in general. It was an initiation into the realm of natural healers. A shaman uses many techniques to help bring balance, healing, empowerment, and insight to a person in need. Soul retrieval, extraction, cord-removal, energy clearing, spirit-release, and many other skills are used for this purpose and I will go into these in detail on following pages.
